An Overview of Carbon Fiber and Fiberglass Hoods Availible for the Ford Mustang.

The Mustang has evolved as an American Icon back in the early sixties through to the modern day as a major tuning vehicle. In the ninties through the current day, the Mustang has found its place in the new "hot rod" generation of import tuning, blending the purist mentality of the muscle car with the wide selection of trick aftermarket parts offered by most import tuner cars.

It seems like a fitting match to have such a wide options of aftermarket parts availible for Americas number one muscle car, as a wide selection of parts have come to fruition with the Mustang yet not many have made it to production for the Mustangs competition of the past: the Camaro and Firebird.

The most popular aftemarket hood design for the Ford Mustang comes by way of the Black Widow 3 or Spyder 3 as some manufacturers call it. This hood comes in fiberglass or more recently because of Carbon Creations in a carbon fiber version. The Black Widow 3 Design is ragher aggressive and fits the car well giving it a dynamic look with a center induction port and two smaller ones on each side. The hood also has some great contour lines that follow the hood well.

VIS Racing has a couple of hoods that blend the old school muslce car look with the high tech new properties of carbon fiber to make the Extreme GT hood and the Cowl Inducted Hood. The Extreme GT has two counter induction ports in the center of the hood that are rather low profile while the Cowl Induction hood has a pronounced raised center section that follows the hood back to the windshield.

Looking for somthing more subtle? Check out the OEM style carbon fiber hoods availible from VIS racing and Seibon. These hoods are built on the factory mold and have the same stock look but are built with high modulus carbon fiber. These hoods have solid underbody skeletons to add integrity to the hoods. Both styles have rolled edges to prevent fraying and have a gorgeous glossy clearcoat to both protect the hood and give it a shiny finish.

We are excited to see the release of the 2005 Ford Mustang carbon fiber hoods which we dont expect to see til at least September, so we will keep you posted.
