Carbon Fiber Trunks and Carbon Fiber Hatch Trends

During the 2004 SEMA show in Las Vegas we were able to obtain an idea of the upcoming trends in the carbon fiber industry and that was one dominated by the emergence of the carbon fiber trunk and hatch trends.

While the carbon fiber hood trend is in full swing and likely to be for quite some time, enthusiasts are developing a crave for more products to complete the stylization of thier carbon fiber trim and that can be done with a matching carbon fiber trunk or hatch. No more than two years old, this new product craze has been undertaken by the leading manufacturers in the industry such as carbon creations, VIS racing and newcomer Seibon.

Honda Civic, Integra and RSX models were among the first to recieve the new retrofittings. Then followed nearly all common cars such as the Ford Mustang, Mitsubishi Lancer and Evo 8, Mini Cooper, Toyota Supra, Mazda RX7 and recently released the Honda S2000, Toyota Celica and even the Nissan 350Z.

One of the greatest benefits of replacing your stock metal trunk or hatch with a carbon fiber one is the weight savings. In a test study, we replaced a 1996 Honda Civic DX Hatch back with a Seibon Carbon Fiber hatch and witnessed a weight savings of 35 pounds over stock. Coupled with a hood and carbon fiber fenders, you are likely to save the weight of a driver!

Look for many new releases to come in the upcoming months as well as some innovative new items such as the carbon fiber hardtop for the Honda S2000 that we saw at the 2004 SEMA Show. Current applications for cabon fiber trunk and hatches are availible for the following cars by VIS and Seibon:
