Carbon Fiber Hoods for the Nissan 350z December 20, 2004

An overview of the carbon fiber hoods availible for the Nissan 350z.

This year at the SEMA show, carbon fiber manufacturer Seibon came out with a bang. They released the latest in a string of sexy and sophisticated new carbon fiber hoods for the 350z, the newest being the Top Secret 2, or TSII carbon fiber hood. This hood features two curvaceous induction ports on both sides of the hood towards the front of the engine bay, useful for turbo applications. The hood wieghs in at a scantily 38 pounds and feels even lighter when latched onto the car.

Last year the hot hood was the Fuzion by VIS Racing. This sculpted hood has only been produced for higher end tuners like the RX7, WRX and even the Chevy Corvette. This hood features similarly slanted induction ports as the TSII, but with three on each side instead of one, and one center port at the top of the hood. This carbon fiber hood makes the 350z look aggressive at the least and compliments the lines of the car well. Also, the hood is made by VIS ensuring the most meticulous blends of carbon fiber in the industry. We were happy with this hood because it stands out quite a bit more than the more popular VIS hoods.

Seibon has also released 3 other non OEM carbon fiber hoods for the 350Z, the TS, VS and VT hoods. In our experience, we have had some fitment problems with two of these hoods, the VT and the VS. The VT seems to be hitting the intake manifold at the center of the plenum and therefore Seibon has pulled this hood for the time being. We have also experienced some problems with fitting the VS with 350Z models that have a strut tower bar installed. We have not had a chance to test the VIS Invader which is VIS's version of the VS hood.

Lastly is the TS hood from Siebon, this is the absolute hot seller of last year and has been on back order for most of the year due to its impressive styling. The TS carbon fiber hood for the 350z is similar in shape to the OEM, but has three slatted induction ports on each side of the hood. This gives the hood a great looking shape and also allows cool air into the engine bay but keeps the engine relatively protected from the elements.

Of course, you could always go for the sleek look of the oem hood. I find this to be a great alternative to the stock one for those seeking something subtle, but then again when it comes to the 350z who wants subtle.
